I began my career at the Department of Engineering Geology at the IRSM in 2001, shortly before completing my M.Sc. in Physical Geography and Geoecology at the Faculty of Science, Charles University (2002). I later pursued a Ph.D. at the same institution, earning my degree in 2009. Since joining the IRSM, I have worked as a researcher, later serving as Head of the Department of Engineering Geology (2018-2023) and Deputy Director of the Institute (2014–2022). In June 2022, I was appointed Director of the Institute.
As a geomorphologist and geologist, my research spans a broad spectrum of geosciences. My recent work, often in collaboration with colleagues, has focused on:
-
Structural and tectonic geomorphology
-
Applications of geophysical methods in geomorphology and engineering geology, particularly geoelectric techniques
-
Geodynamic hazards, including landslides, rockfalls, and tectonic processes
-
Fluvial and sedimentary geomorphology
-
Geoinformatics applications in geosciences, including DEM creation, GIS, and GNSS-assisted mapping
-
Morphometric analysis of DEMs
-
Innovative technologies in geomorphology and geology, such as UAV-based mapping, infrared imaging, thermal effects on rock stability, paleoseismology, and terrestrial LiDAR
Beyond research, I am actively involved in the practical application of these geoscientific methods. My colleagues and I have conducted numerous expert analyses and studies addressing geodynamic hazards such as landslides, rockfalls, and flood risks.
Throughout my career, I have contributed to a wide range of national and international projects, collaborating with institutions such as Charles University, Ostrava University, the University of West Bohemia, the Czech Geological Survey, the Polish Academy of Sciences, Wrocław University, San Diego State University, and many others.
With over two decades of fieldwork experience, I have conducted extensive research in geodynamically significant regions worldwide. While much of my work has focused on locations in the Czech Republic (Šumava Mountains, Czech Cretaceous Plateau, Beskydy Mountains, České Středohoří, and Barrandien), my research has also taken me to Peru, Kyrgyzstan, Slovakia, Slovenia, the USA, Bulgaria, Italy, Poland, Romania, and the Canary Islands. In recent years, I have spent every summer conducting fieldwork in Svalbard, Norway.
To date, I have authored or co-authored over 50 scientific papers, numerous contract research studies and reports, and serve as a reviewer for multiple impact-factor journals. Additionally, I actively promote geoscience through public lectures, seminars, popular science articles, and short films.
Since 2004, I have also been a lecturer at the Department of Physical Geography and Geoecology at Charles University, where I teach subjects such as structural and tectonic geomorphology and field practicals. I am dedicated to mentoring and supervising students, involving them in real research projects to foster the next generation of geoscientists.
