The Institute of Rock Structure and Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, v. v. i., is a scientific workplace focused on the study of the structure and properties of rocks and rock environments. It also deals with research on glasses, technical ceramics, composites and biomaterials, their properties and application potential, and technological issues of inorganic and organic waste processing.
Its research activities are spread across seven scientific departments. The key objectives of the Institute’s research activities are:
a) to acquire, process and distribute scientific knowledge, issue academic publications, and engage in national and international cooperation with universities and other scientific institutions and private companies through joint projects and cooperation agreements,
b) lecturing at universities and the preparation of young academicians through doctoral and post-doctoral programmes, and
c) the administration and operation of research infrastructure and organisation of academic meetings, conferences and seminars at the national and international level.
