A key technology for earthquake early warning is seismic instrumentation that can quickly detectthe onset of an earthquake to provide for the size and location of the nearby ongoing rupture. The Czech Academy of Sciences’ Rotaphone is a new technology that simultaneously measuresground motions and rotations of seismic waves. These measurements can be combined usingseismic gradiometry theory to infer the speed and directions of seismic waves as they occur, effectively turning a single sensor into a large seismic array. This collaborative project between theCzech Academy of Sciences and University of Memphis will involve field testing and softwaredevelopment for using Rotaphone data to quickly detect and locate earthquakes. Joint field workwill include a co-deployment of a Czech Rotaphone instrument and a 60-element, three-component seismic array over faults of the New Madrid seismic zone in 2020. This projectleverages theoretical and field strengths of both institutions to solve a technical problem with important societal application in reducing seismic hazards.
