Methods of fullerene detection in geological materials were judged recently as nonreproducible and problematic. Main goal of the first part of this proposal is to shad light on the interaction of fullerene cages with particular components of the synthetic reference and geological matrices. The key question is as follows - How could a particular interaction initiate fullerene cage derivatization and/or decomposition? The results of these studies will be used for estimation of fullerene behavior as well as the way of preservation of fullerenes in rocks in various geological environments. Evaluation of the influence of elevated temperature, pressure on the fullerene behavior in the matrices and on fullerene stability itself represents an other goal of this project. Results of the proposed in situ analyses of fullerenes spread in geological materials will help our knowledge about their interaction with these materials. This, on tourn will permit us to propose an optimized method for fullerene isolation and detection from particular geological materials. The optimized method of fullerene detection and analysis in geomaterials based on knowledge obtained from above mentioned investigations will be applied to several highly debated samples (samples from deep drilling in Karelia, several new meteorite impacted carbon rich zones, P/T, K/T and T/J boundary layers samples).
