Understanding crustal evolution and active tectonics in Inter plate and Intraplate settings: A comparative case study from the Eastern Himalayas and Western Bohemia

The bilateral project is aimed at sharing knowledge and experience to carry out a comparative investigation on crustal deformation and active faulting in the fast converging, seismically active Darjeeling-Sikkim Himalayas (part of Eastern Himalayas, India) in the plate boundary settings with the slow deforming and with sparse seismicity in plate interior region of western Bohemia (Czech Republic), respectively. The project is focused on obtaining new geological data using multicomponent methods, such as geomorphology, paleoseismology, thermochronology, and geophysics. The newly obtained data on the exhumation and active fault behaviour from both regions will be compared to understand the deformation rate and evolution of the tectonically diverse regions. The exhumation studies using thermochronology may also help in understanding the climate-tectonics coupling in the eastern Himalayas during the late Cenozoic. The active fault and neotectonic study will help in understanding earthquake hazards in the highly-populated study regions.
