Upgrade of Seismic Monitoring Infrastructure in the Arba Minch Area

Upgrade of Seismic Monitoring Infrastructure in the Arba Minch Area

Three seismic stations were installed at the beginning of the year 2024 in the Arba Minch area. The installations and maintenance are done in cooperation with the Institute of the Rock Structure and Mechanics of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arba Minch University under the cover  UNDP-IRH-00048 Czech Challenge Fund 2023 project (Building the seismic monitoring infrastructure in southern Main Ethiopian Rift (Arba Minch Area).  The seismic stations have recorded many events, not only felt ones like on May 12th, 2024, but also weak ones.

The monitoring of seismic activity, facilitated by the seismic stations, can indicate a possible large earthquake. Moreover, seismic monitoring is  crucial for seismic hazard assessment in the region.
